Spend a night in Ypres to appreciate the Last Post, played at 8pm, established in 1927 and played every evening. It happens at the Menin Gate, on which is carved the name of almost 55,000 soldiers who gave their lives and have no known graves.

Ypres is located around 33 miles from Dunkirk. Having the car will be ideal to tour around the battlefields and cemetries of the area. Don't miss In Flanders Fields, Ramparts and Kattenstoet museums, dedications to the soldiers who died in the Great War.

The centre of Ypres also offers a lovely vision of Belgian life. Sample the local delicacies and bring home souvenirs of chocolate, lace and beer.
